efore the 昀椀re of 1877 at the U.S. Patent Of昀椀ce separately printed U.S. patent lithographs were printed by
the American Photo-Lithographic Company of New
York up to June 30, 1874 and by the Graphic Company of
New York up to June 29, 1875. Thereafter, they were printed
by Norris Peters Co. Photo-Lithographer of Washington D.C.,
temporarily superseded by James R. Osgood & Co. of Boston
and the Graphic Company of New York (see the Key). The
reproductions of the lost sets were printed by Norris Peters Co.
Photo-Lithographer [1]. Therefore, 昀椀rst edition patents from
before the 昀椀re of 1877 can be identi昀椀ed for all the periods
where Norris Peters Co. Photo-Lithographer was not contracted by the USPTO, i.e., in most cases (see the Key and, e.g.,
昀椀gure 2 regarding Joseph F. Glidden’s famous U.S. Patent No.
157,124, patented November 24, 1874 from our collection,
printed by the Graphic Company, and from the National Archives, printed by the Norris Peters Company [5]).
